November Gambling Podcast - Problem Gambling Awareness. The American Casino Guide has a monthly podcast hosted by the book's author, Steve Bourie, who talks about topics of interest to travelers who like to visit casinos and during the course of each show he  interviews a special guest from the world of casino travel or gambling.

Bellagio: Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to announce the extension of its popular “American Modernism” exhibition.  The compelling collection now can be viewed through January 2, 2009.  Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), the exhibition features masterworks by Georgia O’Keeffe, Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, Arshile Gorky and others.  The period known as American Modernism began at the turn of the 20th century and reached its pinnacle between World War I and World War II.  During this time, celebrated artists such as O’Keeffe began experimenting with painting by offering a subjective take on traditional still life and landscape techniques. Tickets for “American Modernism” are $15 for general admission, $12 for Nevada residents and seniors 65 and older, $10 for students, teachers and military with valid ID, and children 12 and younger are FREE.

Jerry's Nugget: Offering a discount to active and non-active members of the military at Jerry’s Famous Coffee Shop and Uncle Angelo’s Pizza Joint.  The More Club Military Discount program will grant active members of the military a 25 percent discount on meals purchased at either restaurant. Non-active military, including veterans and retired personnel, will receive a 15 percent discount. The discount is eligible on dine-in orders of $10 or more and includes food and all beverage choices with the exception of food specials inside Jerry’s Famous Coffee Shop. Customers who wish to participate in this promotion should present their military ID, along with their More Club card, to the More Club counter for enrollment. Jerry's Nugget: Hosting a series of blackjack tournaments on the first Tuesday of each month through December. Members of The More Club who wish to try their luck at blackjack have the opportunity to win cash prizes. The first place winner receives $1,000 and the second place winner $500. The third and fourth place prizes are $300 and $100, respectively. The entrants who come in fifth and sixth receive $50 each. Coast Casinos: Registration has begun for the 31st annual Pick the Pros football contest at all Coast Casino locations. This year’s contest is free and $30,000 will be awarded each week during the 2008 regular professional football season. Each week is a new contest (you do not have to participate for the entire season) and a total of  $30,000 will be awarded to the winner or winners with a $10,000 guaranteed top prize each week. Contest participants will not compete against the point spread, but rather pick winners. Each participant will receive three free entries per week to select their winning teams. The FBI estimates that more than $2.5 billion is illegally wagered annually on March Madness each year. Comparatively, sports book operators estimate $80 million to $90 million – less than 4 percent of the illegal take – is wagered on the tournament legally through Nevada’s 187 sports books. According to the NCAA, more than 10 percent of Americans participate in March Madness “office pools.”

Coming in at #2 last year was the Kentucky Derby

The 2007 Super Bowl marked the second biggest Super Bowl revenue for the Nevada Sports Books ever, with gross revenue for the weekend reaching $12.9 million.  Approximately $93 million was wagered on the Super Bowl in the state’s sports books in 2007, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

In the 12 states with commercial casinos in operation in 2007, casinos contributed $5.79 billion in tax revenue to state and local governments, a 11.3 percent increase over 2006

In 1989 The Mirage Hotel & Casino Resort opened in Las Vegas and it began the tradition of the destination casino resort. When it opened, the Mirage was the most expensive hotel casino ever built, with construction costs of $630 million. It featured more than 3,000 rooms and headliner attractions such as Siegfried and Roy's magic show.

Slots and other electronic gaming machines generate about 65% of the gaming revenues for the average U.S. casino.

Blackjack is the most popular table game in U.S. casinos.

There are 11 states with "racinos" - racetracks with a casino - Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana , Maine, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia.

Of the total amount bet on the Super Bowl, only about 1.5 percent is wagered legally; these bets are made by those over age 21 and physically present in the state of Nevada.
