Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: No more fun at the sun

As a member of their "Elite Club", I have been coming to the Sun since it first opened. It used to be a fun place to come and drop a few dollars in the slots and have a good time. However, over the last several months I walk in with my 100 dollars and ten minutes later I am walking out broke.

You can't even get a decent amount of play out of the machines. My last trip I played a Playboy penny slot machine, mid range bet (.75 cents) and hit the bonus. While in bonus mode I won a total of 50 free games, the maximum allowed by the machine. I counted 35 straight spins without a single winning line. Not one!!! When the bonus was finished I had won a total of $40.00. This wouldnt be so bad if I wasnt already into the machine for $60.00. I decided to continue to play the machine and after playing back $20.00 more without a single winning line or bonus I left. I have found this to be the norm when playing there anymore. You have little chance of hitting bonus rounds on the machines and when you do hit them, they pay out horribly. Outside of the Atmosphere of the casino, there is little other reason to keep going there.

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: What a waste!

I live in the Wilkes Barre area. The video poker return is terrible. The best I found was 97.8%, and most are in the 95%-96% range. And no progressives on VP - reel slots only. I haven't put a penny in these machines and never will. Currently, table games are electronic only but real live table games are supposed to arrive shortly. Based on the VP payback, I'm expecting 8-deck shoes with the cut card after 4 decks, auto-shuffle machines, and a 6-5 blackjack payout. If we get anything better, it will be a surprise.

All chairs are fixed to the floor. You can't move them forward or back to make yourself comfortable. Not that it matters to me since I don't play here, but I note this because I find it very annoying (I have long legs and always slide the chair back for comfort) at other casinos.

The casino is arranged in a circle, games inside, businesses outside, and a bar in the middle, much like the Hard Rock in Vegas. But unlike the Hard Rock, the casino floor is not sunken, instead the center bar is raised. And the machines are packed in pretty tight (not as bad as the El Cortez used to be, but still squeezed in like most downtown LV casinos today) with most having their volume set to maximum. This results in a claustrophobic feeling - you can see and hear only what's immediately around you. IMHO, they really blew it here. They had the opportunity to design something nice from scratch, and this is the best they could come up with? I also feel sorry for the handicapped. I'm not handicapped and am capable of walking a good distance, but ALL parking is a LONG way from the casino, even the closest handicapped spots. For some reason, they have nothing but roads and grass near the casino, with all parking way outside.

The food outlets are the only reason to consider going here. But be prepared to open your wallet; the buffet is more expensive than the Vegas-equivalent locals buffets, and the restaurants are expensive. The food is good, but I've personally decided to stay away and save my money for Vegas (when I go out to eat, I go elsewhere - it's cheaper).

In summary, this place is for suckers. But there seem to be plenty of them, people with magic pants that continually produce money. Until the suckers run out of money, things aren't going to change.

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: Recommended with reservations

We've been there a dozen times and at Mt. Airy about 30 times. We've been to well over one hundred casinos and only Vegas is Vegas. So if you just want a pleasant evening out playing machines MS fills the bill. Remember at MS you have the advantage of live harness racing (and simulcasting) in a great atmosphere which gives you variety.

My wife is a slot player and loves the place. I play the horses or video poker. Payout tables on video poker machines are generally lousy. The policy of "no free alcoholic drinks" (I think) comes from the fact that there is no hotel on premises and nearly all guests will drive home. MS does not want to get sued like other establishments (Giant Stadium in NJ) for "causing" auto accidents by "pushing" drinks. (Consider this as an educated guess by a lawyer)

Buffet is excellent for the price. Great interior design inspired by but not in the league of MS in Ct. Lots of live entertainment and wide reasonably priced food selection. Smoking policy works just fine. Staff while not unpleasant, could be more animated. In Vegas the staff seeks the customer out, in Pennsylvania the reverse seems to be the rule.

The most logical comparison is not with AC or Vegas but with local competitors (Mt. Airy) and other racinos. As a racino its as nice as any and only lacks "real" table games. Better food selection than Mt. Airy.

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: Terrrible Place

This place is the worst ever. You will have better luck playing dice in one of the local trailer parks. The place is loaded with all old people with walkers, wheelchairs and air tanks. Dont't forget to mention the old ass people smoking with air tanks. It's small and the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is terribly overrated and priced.

The managers are cheap like used car salesmen and the waitress/waiters are useless. The place is packed with staff running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The steaks are drowned in butter and the sides suck. The mashed potatos are like eating milky potatos with garlic. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE TIME STOPPING HERE!!

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: DISAPPOINTED

The place is beautiful; the gaming floor is nicely designed. It is a tremendous improvement over the original two story venue. There is a circular walkway around the casino floor which houses various retail stores and the restaurants. The buffet I felt was fabulous for the price.

I was disappointed in the very bad payback percentages of the video poker machines. No 9/6 nor 9/5 Jacks/Better; very bad Deuces/Wild; terrible payoff on Pick'em Poker. i don't know about the high limit area. I only scanned the 25 cent machines in which one can also play 50 cents or $1.00.

The drink situation I found terrible. The only thing free is the coffee and soda. You must pay for your gambling drinks. The cocktail waitresses hound you for a drink; constantly asking if you wish one. If I didn't have to pay for one perhaps they could earn a gratuity.

The gaming atmosphere was pleasant but the video poker machines are terrible. I found a 5 cent triple play Deuces/Wild which I had no choice but to play. If only they would improve the poker payoffs, I might return otherwise it's ciao.

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: It's not what it was

When the casino first opened the winnings were much better. My pay out percentage is down to about 35% compared to about 65% back about two years ago..and the comps!!! Can they spare the few dollars that they give you after dropping hundreds in the machines?

The food court and the buffet is really going downhill, I even spoke personally with the food manager who 6 months ago said he was going to improve on it. The dessert place and Ice Cream Place are a rip off ...you're not getting your monies worth.

Last, but not least, they've increased the floor smoking area to 50%. When the floor is about 70% full the smoke is so bad that your eyes start to burn and worst is that your breathing secondhand smoke, if you're concerned about your health stay away. Sure they have a non-smoking area but the smoke drifts all over the entire floor area.

Overall, it's a beautiful facility, the help tries hard, but this casino management needs to get the operations back on track to where it was when it first opened its new addition in 2008. Until it does, I'll start going back to Atlantic City where the machines pay much better and they comp you very generously plus free meals, shows and free hotel rooms..A/C is worth the trip.

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: I never thought it could get any worse, but it has

I never thought that the play at Mohegan Sun could get any worse, but it has. In the last 6 weeks I have seen the mohegan sun decline in not only their slot play, but in every way imaginable. This casino is in serious trouble if they continue to operate the way they are. Here are some of the main problems I have found with this casino:

1. Slot play. I thought it was bad before, but now it has become just plain insulting to the player. You are lucky if you are able to get a 30% payout on any machine that you play, I know, I was keeping track. On a Playboy machine I was playing I put 40 dollars into it and won exactly 4 dollars back, and that was with a bonus spin. Bonus spins are rare on any machine you play and when you do hit a bonus the payout is horrible. I played a Red Hot Jackpot machine and hit the bonus rounds twice in 40 dollors worth of play. Both bonus rounds paid an average of seven dollars, which it immediately took back without a single winning line in between. If I could have rated the slot play any lower, it would have been in the negative numbers.

2. Atmosphere: There is a lack of friendliness and personality, the employees wander around like zombies on the floor looking like they would rather be somewhere else. And I am sure they have heard alot of complaining from the patrons, so I am sure they would rather be somewhere else, refer to line 1 as to why people are complaining. I will say however that the employees in the Valet department are very friendly and do try to make people feel welcome when they arrive.

3. Machine upkeep: Wow! What is wrong with the people running this place??? Half the card readers dont work most of the time, so you will lose ALOT of comps if you are not watching the readers carefully. I couldnt believe how many of their machines have broken buttons, cracked glass, and burned out lights. One machine I know of in particular has had a broken glass on it for at least the last 4 months and STILL hasnt been repaired. Here's a tip for the management: FIX YOUR BROKEN EQUIPMENT!

4. Food: Greaseburgers from hell, Hotdogs that are better suited to a dog's rubber chew toy, or an overpriced steakhouse no one can afford to go to. The Buffet is not bad, just a little on the bland side. The ice cream place, is good if you can get someone to come out from their back room to actually serve you.

Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs: Typical Pennsylvania ripoff

As you may have noticed, I graded some of the categories (1). That is because I could not score it a zero. Most especially the blackjack machines. I would respect a person who placed a gun in my ribs and robbed me of my money more than these machines.

These machines are...simply stated "fixed." You are playing a computer. If you draw a 20, dealer will mysteriously draw 21. Especially if a large bet has been placed. A word to the wise. Stay away from all PA casinos until they allow live card games. That way the casino cheat advantage will vanish.

I live in Wilkes Barre and was all for the casino when it opened. However, since the opening of the main building the slot play has really gone into the toilet. It used to be fun to go there and drop a few dollars into the machines, you knew the odds were against you but you still gave it a try and they gave you relatively good play. Now there is only one word that I can use to describe the level of play you get from any slot machine there, that word is "Predictable".

If you are a video poker player, this casino is not for you. They have very few video poker machines and the denominations start at $.25. They need more VP machines.

The casino is beautiful and the numerous restruants are okay. It's easy to lose your money very quickly, it seems the payouts are low compared to other casinos.
