Could be better, Saturday, 17 October 2009 Written by Allison Hanley Unfortunately I have been a regular at Charlestown for the past 3 years. The first year I did alright, but with all the giveaways with the cars I have seen a decline in the payouts with the slots. When you go you want to stay more than a couple of hours. You would think that 25 cent machines would give a little back. The Spam machine is fun, but just silly because you're not going to win and the nickel machines are the biggest scams ever. If I do see a wiinner it's the 5 dollar machines. Food is a little better than average - could be better. My biggest complaint is the smoke!!!! It never used to bother me, but for some reason at this casino it is horrendous! And I have to say that some of the patrons there are unbelievably rude. Staff is nice, bartenders are real good and friendly. I am glad I am a black card holder though - I almost feel guilty about cutting in the front of the line-- but then I don't when a machine kicks my butt. They should hire more people.

Slots, Saturday, 26 September 2009 Written by Jean My husband and I have been coming to CT for about 5 years. We were bringing home some money. Now that the new garage has been built, the new hotel has been built, no payoffs coming our way. My husband won $10,000 in October, 2005, nothing worth bragging about since. The "black card" is very unfair to those of us that can't afford to come every week and spend money. I spend MONEY at CT, too, why can't I get the same service, without someone breaking in line? They, also, have a certain place to park. My husband is handicapped, there might be an open spot where the black card holders park, I can't park there so I can get his wheelchair off the ramp. I have to keep looking for a handicapped spot big enough to get the wheelchair off the ramp. Also, does security check these handicapped spots? There are a lot of people parking in these spots that don't have handicapped license plates showing or the placard. I have seen people park in these spots and run into the casiino. I have been to Delaware Park Slots, this is a very nice casino and the payoff is fair. Will be a while before we go back to CT . It's a 3 hour drive from my home to CT.

Won't visit again, Saturday, 26 September 2009 Written by bill kine 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful
Avoid as much as possible, Monday, 14 September 2009 Written by Michael Jai The resturants aren't anything you should put on your "to do list". Just stop at any resturant on your way there. You'll save both money and time. The Slots don't pay out as much as they used to. I rarely see people win. The employees aren't as friendly either. It seems like your bothering them by asking a simple question. If you want to gamble worth your while visit Delaware. Make sure you look at the casino companies whenever Maryland gets slots. The same company (Penn National) that owns Charles Town races and slots has bought property in Maryland to open a casino. This means you will pretty much receive the same service and gambling experience you receive at Charles Town. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful

Worst casino in the US, Saturday, 29 August 2009 Written by Cathy Used to be a place to have fun and maybe win a few dollars, not anymore. They only care about the big time gamblers and are rude to the average players. Stop the car giveaways and let the machines pay off once in awhile. The food is overpriced and not any good and the smoking and air circulation is really unhealthy. If you want to have fun visit any of the delaware casinos, come on Maryland open up, we will come and forget Charlestown.

Not a place for fun, Sunday, 23 August 2009 Written by Bethany Ryce I visited this place on Saturday and it was packed as a can of beans! There was a really long wait for the eateries and the food didn't wow me. I would have been better off going to McDonalds and Saving $20. We ate at a resturant called Sundance and it was awful. The burger was dry and you could tell it wasn't fresh. The bread ripped and fell apart right before you picked it up. After eating we went to their dessert stand and there was nothing to choose form. There were almost no desserts and a really big line. They only had one person working that place on a Saturday. I personally think this company makes themselves look bad by the service they put out. I was there all day and didn't win one dollar. I chatted with some other guests and they told me they hadn't won either. The least a comany can do is provide better food service at a fair price if they don't want to let guests win on the slots.

Ridiculous, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 Written by James 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful
TERRIBLE!, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 Written by Kevin Miller There is never enough employees in this place! You have to wait in long 30-45 minute lines just to receive low-quality food. No matter what resturant you visit you never get good food. When you ask employees where their help is they always respond with the same answer "what help?". They tell me that they never have help because the casino doesn't want to pay for more workers but their business is booming. Did I mention stuff is extremely overpriced?! The slots never pay off either. I only keep going because my wife is addicted to gambling and I have look over her. 6 of 8 people found the following review helpful
stay away, Saturday, 08 August 2009 Written by dennis Every time i go to Ccharlestown I lose all the money I had with me. but that's o.k. - I expected that. I would like to see my money last a little longer. I have seen extremely few jackpots hit. I do like the spam slots. You are not going to win anything, but they are a lot of fun to play. I am going to concentrate my trips to the PA casino in washington. I have much better luck there. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful
Can't win here, Saturday, 08 August 2009 Written by Charles Kelly As a long time visitor to Charlestown, I have to say, I thought it was a streak of bad luck. But if you look at websites such as Tripadvisor, you will see that it is not much fun when you go to a casino continuiously and never win. They have one of the worst payout percentages in the country. They have their big GIVEAWAY drawings (the only time they get a crowd in the place) hoping to get what I call the BIGTAKE. I question what will be the attraction when Maryland gets slots and you don't need to drive 70 miles from MD, VA,and DC. Boycott this place and send them a message. Also let WV lottery know that this WILL have a great effect in the years to come on them, because they also refuse to take action against Penn National.

stay away from CHARLES TOWN RACES,SLOTS, Thursday, 16 July 2009 Written by Mimi Ryan I never go to Charlestown anymore because I have to live with the guilt and it is not fun!!! Go to DELEWARE PARK Their 92.69% payback should make your dollar go a bit farther. Don't expect to win at CHARLESTOWN. If you want to give money away, give to a needy charity. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful
Use to be fun, not any more, Tuesday, 07 July 2009 Written by Adele Boese
My husband and I use to go to CT about once every 3 months. Up until about a year ago, we could easily go with 2 or 3 hundred dollars a piece and play all night, eventually we lost everything, but we had fun doing it. Now we go and we can easily lose the 2 or 3 hundred within an hour.

Great Visit, Monday, 15 June 2009 Written by Debbie My husband and I have been going to CTRS for about 8 years. We go about every 3 to 6 months. The machines are not quite as loose as before they started the upgrades but it is a very nice place. Very friendly staff, good food and we usually come out ok. We just don't take money we are not willing to lose. Yes we always want to win but you know that can't happen. We just spent the weekend there and had a blast. We both won and have been when we lost so I'm not writting this because we won. One of us usually wins and one loses, sort of funny as to who will win and who will lose this trip. My husband won $1500.00 and then next day $1300.00 along with a few hits of $400 or so. I hit for $600 once and $700 once and a few smaller amounts. we did lost some but this place is nice and we always have a very nice time. I actually accidently left some money in a machine about a year ago and the staff was unbelievable about it. I was the idiot to forget my ticket but they did some super work and found my money and returned it to me. This place IS NOT just about taking your money. They could have just said be more careful but they helped me and were great. Just had to let some of you know that it is a nice place and wonderful people. Didn't want to just let you all read all bad reviews and really it's not like that. nice, clean and friendly. 16 of 17 people found the following review helpful
Join the Club, Friday, 22 May 2009 Written by entertainer51 I'm sorry to say that I must jump on the bandwagon and express my recent displeasure with CTRS. Used to win, but no more. I love to play the slots and this is the closest facililty, but I much prefer Dover Downs. I have been to Charlestown with groups of 4-6 people and no one won anything. Either we are the unluckiest people on the planet, or the payouts are so low that it is virtually impossible to take home any cash. The attendants walk around bored, just hoping for the opportunity to hand pay someone. The smoking is also out of control and should be banned. The Players Club is trying to improve, but sending me a $5.00 cash coupon is not going to encourage me to make a trip there. I have seen so many negative reviews on Charlestown that they either are clueless to how their patrons feel or they simply don't care because there is no local competition. My guess is they are laughing all the way to the bank!

Not to bad, Monday, 11 May 2009 Written by Chris
i went down there just to check it out, didnt bring much money, just 20 bucks, played on pennies just for the experience for about an hour and a half, won nothing, A few minutes later i tried a 5 cent machine and won another 30 on my third try.
My advice, move around, dont sit there at the same lame machine all night, 15 of 17 people found the following review helpful
Not too much fun!, Thursday, 05 February 2009 Written by Waylon As others have stated, the slots are way too tight. My wife and I have been going to Charles Town since 2001. It used to be fun. Most of the time we always walked out with a profit and stayed most of the day on $200 to $300. Than half way through 2006 it all changed!! Now you are lucky if you are still there with $400 after 2 hours. They are just taking advantage of people. I would like to play on their money sometimes. You go there for entertainment. Charles Town fails in giving us entertainment. You may ask, why do you go than? Yes it's a habit, a bad habit and we always think that it will be different when we go back. WRONG. So bad that we have stopped going as much as we used to. In fact I don't play that much anymore. I just walk around with my wife and watch her play. Save your money and go to Atlantic City.

Update, Sunday, 01 February 2009 Written by Justin Lately slots have become tighter, what few loose slots are available regulars have found and almost fight over. I'm not a sore loser. I acccept my gambling debt and when my payout total drops below 75% I won't go back to the casino. It's become so bad there it's no longer uncommon for players club cards to be found on the ground in the slots, in the trash... not just their base members, but black level cards as well. In one weekend my payout dropped to 50%. If you're gonna play, good luck to you. Look for the lowest payout slots with low max bets, and by no means does placement theory have any effect on your chances of winning. It used to be fun. Now, all I hear is people cussing and swearing that they're not coming back. The only hot machine is the ATM. In three weekend trips and six hours a night, may have heard, or seen, a jackpot winning three times.

Charles Town Races and slots, Monday, 26 January 2009 Written by Justin I feel like so many places its relative to your luck and overall knowledge of slots. West Virginia slots are set for an 85% payback, if you expect to hit the true jackpot good luck I only hit it once. As far as play wise is concerned they do offer decent paybacks if you play their highest priced machines and have a good bankroll. If you play under their dollar slots forget it, they're set tight no matter where you play crosswalks, by the bars.... I usually have the best luck on their five dollar pulls. That being said I will never go back to Dover unless I have a $500 bankroll to blow in 5 minutes. Screw Dover. All I do is lose big. no wonder they offer free hotels which I tell them to shove. Anyway, if you go to Charlestown, plan to play a $500 bankroll and 5 dollar pulls The quarters and most 50 cent slots are super tight, if you hit a decent payout you will be lucky to break even. Also, avoid the multi-lines like in the money. By the time you get a decent hit you're not even breaking even. Also, avoid their hot hot jackpots. At best I can break even on my bankroll. Hope this helps, oh and their players choice is only helpful if you live nearby.

Terrible Paybacks JAN4 2009, Monday, 05 January 2009 Written by Mike Kuznear My father and myself have been visiting for at least 10 years now, about 6 times a year. The paybacks have gotten worse and worse each year. When we first started out playing they used to payback in coins, then they went to paper in paper out. At first we won quite often but since they went to ticket payout we rarely come out a winner. We have cut back on our trips there as we don`t have as much fun anymore and who likes to lose everytime you go.Take my advice stay home or go to Atlantic City or Vegas. 14 of 15 people found the following review helpful
Tight Slots & No Comps, Wednesday, 01 October 2008 Written by Deanna Lang I go to the casino to have a little fun and get away from work, but going to Charles Town and playing felt like work! The parking was great, and the food was good. The hotel has a beautiful atmosphere, but that's about it! The player's club program needs a little tweaking too. When I found out how much I had to play to get ANYTHING, I put the card away! 19 of 19 people found the following review helpful
Tight Slot Play, Monday, 22 September 2008 Written by John Frields My wife and I travel to many casinos throughout the year, most often to Charlestown, Atlantc City, Connecticut, and Niagara Falls. Once every three years we travel to either Las Vegas, California/Arizona, or the gulf coast (Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi). We live in Northern Virginia so we play at Charlestown Races & Slots frequently. I can say without any doubt that Charlestown has the tightest slot play of any casino we have ever played. Worst than even the cruise ships, day boats out of South Carolina and Florida, and the casinos in the various islands in the Caribbean. We still go to Charlestown because of convenience, but we take a modest bankroll and don't have enough success to hang around for more than a few hours. Too bad. The casino has a fine atmosphere and excellent parking and floor service. The restuarants aren't bad either. If you want to play all day, or perhaps stay overnight and play two days, forget it. Your money won't last long. Unless you live fairly close, I would recommend you find locations that have looser slots elsewhere (downtown Las Vegas or off the Vegas strip).

Charlestown Slots, Monday, 11 August 2008 Written by Mike I have been many times to Charlestown and have only lost! The slots have a very low payout ratio, even on the nickel machines. I guess they need to pay for the new Motel and all of the parking decks. I go because it is closer than Atlantic City, however, I think , my visits are over. I have had much better luck at A.C. New Jersey! Also, they sure do not advertise the payout anywhere! They gave away a Corvette or $40,000.00 on our last visit. Forget the cars and such, raise your payout or loose players! 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful

Charlestown Races and Slots, Tuesday, 30 November 1999 Written by entertainer51 I have gone through machine after machine without one winner. The Players Club card is useless. You don't get anything in terms of comps or freebies. Do away with the drawings and loosen up the machines. Expand the non-smoking areas or eliminate smoking completely. In the evenings, you can barely breathe. |
