Opened by “The Donald” in April, 1990, “The Taj” set a new standard for Atlantic City casinos. From the ground up, the facility is unprecedented in many ways. The building support pilings, if laid end to end, would stretch 62 miles from Atlantic City to Philadelphia. Italian carrera marble floors adorn the hotel’s lobby, guest rooms, casino, hallways, and public areas. Fine carpets and works of art are plentiful, plus ceilings abound with German crystal chandeliers, many valued at $250,000 each. The hotel contains 1,250 guest rooms, including 237 suites housed in the hotel tower. A new tower, to open in late 2008, will add 782 new rooms and 74 new suites, each equipped with a 50" HD plasma TV, iPod docking station, wireless internet access, large bathrooms, coffee service, premium linens, and a refrigerator and safe. Suites will feature a living room and dining area, with one bedroom and private bath as well as a powder room and wet bar. Accommodations range in price from about $100 to $10,000 per night.
The casino is massive with over 160,000 square feet of gaming space and contains 3,787 slot machines, 132 traditional table games, 71 poker tables, and a 48,000-square-foot simulcast lounge. Table games include Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Spanish 21, Double Attack Blackjack, Baccarat and Mini Baccarat, Three Card and Four Card Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker, Let it Ride, and Pai Gow. The non-smoking poker room offers 7 card stud, Omaha, and Texas Hold’em, with tableside food service. There’s also an exclusive high-limit section, and the casino is the home of the United States Poker Championship. Poker tournaments are offered daily, with entry fees ranging from $50 to $300. Dining options throughout the resort are numerous: Sultan’s Feast Buffet (overlooking the Atlantic Ocean), Italian, French, and Asian specialty restaurants, a Hard Rock Café and a Rainforest Lounge, Starbucks and other fast-food spots, and a 24-hour café. For those interested in non-gaming amenities, the Taj offers a lavish full-service spa with indoor tanning, Jacuzzis, a sauna, a steam bath, and an indoor olympic size pool. Nightclubs include the Casbah (recently voted the #1 nightclub in Atlantic City), and Ego, the new ultra lounge. Entertainment is offered at the Mark G. Etess Arena, which hosts sporting events and head-liners, and at Xanadu, the spectacular showroom hosting such super stars as George Carlin and The Monkees.
